Ich hab bloß die Stelle im Buch gelesen, an der sie ermordet wurde. Meine Freundin, die das Glück hat, eine beinahe komplette Animorphs-Sammlung zu besitzen, hat das Buch aber vollständig gelesen und hat mir den Tathergang so geschildert: Tom, der jetzt aus irgendeinem Grund auch morphen konnte, hat sich in eine Schlange gemorpht. Rachel, vermutlich im Bärenmorph, hat ihm den Kopf abgebissen, wurde dabei aber vergiftet, sodass sie zurück- und neu morphen musste. Visser 3 (zu der Zeit schon Visser 1) war im Eisbärenmorph. Rachel wurde dann wieder so stark verletzt, dass sie nochmal zurückmorphen musste. Die Chance hat Visser 1 natürlich genutzt und mit der Pranke zugeschlagen ... Na, ja, Rachel hat das dann leider nicht überlebt.

Das ist voll schade das Rachel stirbt! Ich habe den Band vor kurzem selbst gelesen, und ich fand es total traurig, dass Rachel getötet wurde.

Our sixth graders learn quite a lot of story setucturrs and literary elements through picture book read-alouds. We used The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein, Fly Away Home by Eve Bunting, and The Other Side by Jacqueline Woodson to discuss setting and its impact on character and plot, just for example. Some of the picture books in our classroom library have a reading level (Accelerated Reader; a measure of vocabulary) of seventh grade! The Other Side may only have a second grade reading level, but it explores the effect of segregation on young children and uses a fantastic metaphor throughout the book.Picture books are definitely useful. As a teacher, I do occasionally have to wrestle The Butter Battle Book away from a sixth grader and coax them into reading something closer to their level, but I also recognize why they pick it up: for entertainment.
